Wow! My eyes are burning and want to close just from trying to read all the posts on this site. I am trying to find my relatives on both sides. My paternal grandfather (Peter Paul Zangara), my maternal grandfather (Frank LoBiondo) and my maternal grandmother (Nancy Valentino LoBiondo) are all from Palermo, Sicily. I am researching my family's history on both my mother's and father's side. My mother's family immagrated here from Sicily (surnames are Damico and Naselli) and my father's family immagrated here from Genoa (surname is Bacigalupo) and Naples (surname is Chieffo). The Damico's and Naselli's both settled in Downtown Manhattan around 13th Street and the Chieffo's and Bacigalupo's settled in Brooklyn in the Bay Ridge area. My great grandfather on the Chieffo side was a barber. I am having a hard time because my grandparents are first generation Americans and don't know very much about thier realatives in Italy. I have family records for the Laurello (Laurelli) family tree dating back to the 1700's. My grandmother on my mother's side was Anita Laurello who lived most of her life in Ashtabula, Ohio. She was born in Isernia in the Abruzzo-Molise Region of Italy, and there are still many Laurellos living there today. I have visited Isernia several times and recommend the town for summer visits because it is not too touristy and there are many Etruscan, Roman, and Samnite ruins to discover and photograph there. It is an excellent place to bicycle--some of the roads are 17% grades up and down.

I know that Giralma (nee Castro) and Francisco Inzinga lived in Cerda in the early 1900's. His parents were Grace (?) and Philip Inzinga. Giralma's parents were Cosma (nee LoBello) and Cosmo Castro. There may also have been relatives living in Termini at one time or another. There are also Inzinga's that are related and live on the east coast of US (NY?).

My Family is from Barga, Lucca IT near Florence. I am looking for living relatives and any further information on ancestors earlier than those I now mention. My gg-grandfather's name is Domenico born 1805 in Barga. His wife is named Assunta. Her maiden name was also Caproni. Sketchy information I have from a relative is that Domenico was raised by a Henry Marcucci. Assunta's parents Lorenzo and Marghorita along with Domenico and Assunta are all listed on the 1840 Barga church record. Domenico's son Antonio is my g-grandfather. He came to Chicago where he had a Saloon in the 1870s and 1880s. He married an Illinois girl named Mary Eliza Darnell. his older brother Joseph stayed in Italy and had several sons most of whom came to the Chicago area. Antonio helped most of them get started in business. I have located a few of their descendants but many of them either died young or went back to Italy before 1906. I have located another Caproni family group in the US centered in Maysville, Ky. I went to their reunion in 1995. Their roots are also from Barga/CastelVecchio.

I am searching for descendants of ELISABETTA DiMARCO. Elisabetta arrived in New York from Italy (city unknown) in late 1904 or early 1905. She was unmarried. On May 17, 1905 she gave birth to a son whom she named Giuseppe DiMarco. On May 26, 1905, Giuseppe was baptised at St. Lucy's Church on East 104th Street in New York. Elisabetta surrendered Giuseppe to The New York Foundling Hospital on that same date. On January 21, 1907, Giuseppe was put on an orphan train and was indentured to the V. Chatelain family in Mansura, Louisiana. He married and had three daughters, before dying at the age of 29. My husband is one of Giuseppe's grandsons. Searching out for relatives in the US or still in Italy, my fathers side name is Lolli and my mothers side is Valianti. My father was born and raised in Teramo, Abruzzi Italy. His father was Louis Lolli one of many siblings that were raised in an orphanage run by nuns. I want to assume that the orphanage was in Abruzzi or somewhere near Abruzzi. I doubt in the late 1800's traveling was probably not real easy. My grandfather and his siblings all left the orphange when they turned 18. I am looking for information on the Montana name and the Otillio (D'Otillio) name. My great grandfather, Gaetano Joseph Montana, emigrated with his family to New Orleans from Alcamo, Sicily aboard the SS Manilla in 1903. I have less specific information about the origin of the Otillio name. My grandmother tells me that her grandfather, Giovanni Gennaro Otillio was from Genoa and stowed away on a ship bound for Louisiana sometime in the middle to late 1800's. He got off the ship in Houma Louisiana where he married a Cajun women, Marie Modeste Labat. Soonafter, he made his way to New Orleans where he lived until his death. My granmother also tells me that the name Otillio originally was spelled D'Otillio. With the exception of the direct ancestors of John Gennaro Otillio who still live in New Orleans, I cannot find any Otillios or D'Otillios in the internet white pages (I searched both in the United States white pages and in the Italian white pages.) If any one has any information of this name and the Montana name also, it would be appreciated.

Hello, one and all. My grandfather was born in Santa Christina de Gela in 1893 (his parents were Tom & Myrtle (Panipinto) Matranga). He immigrated to the US in 1920 after spending 6 years (1913-1919) in the Italian Army. He came through Ellis Island and made is way to Sacramento, California, where some of his friends had come to before the war. A few days after arriving in Sacramento he and his friend Nick Guzzetta went to Huston, Texas, and married 2 sisters, Josi (Nick) and Mary (Frank) Calagna (their parents were Pete & Josi (Bua) Calagna, their parents were Charlie and Anne (Parino) Calagna). My grandmother (b. 1900?) and her family are from Piana de Grecci. They returend to Sacramento, were my dad Peter F. Matranga Sr. and was born in 1925, I was born in Sacramento in 1949. My great grandparents came to Canandaigua, NY with my grandfather Giuseppe Catalfamo and his siblings in 1913. He went back to San Procopio and married my grandmother, Giuseppina Sofo, who was his first cousin, in 1925. Their youngest daughter Maria Carmella was my birth mother but her brother Rocco raised me. Rocco's siblings were Domenica, Francesco, Caterina, Vincenzo, Maria and Salvatore. Rocco, Domenica, Caterina, and Salvatore are still living. Ancestor in Italy was another Francesco Catalfamo, probably born in the 1830's or 40's who fought with Garibaldi. My great grandfather, Rocco, was born in 1860, the year Garibaldi liberated Calabria and Sicily.

Dear Joe, I love your website. I have been looking for ancestors that were all from Palermo. My mother was married in Livorno July 7, 1946 and left Palermo in November 1946 to go to the USA to live leaving behind 5 younger sisters, her mom and an aunt never to see them again. My dad was in the Army serving WWII when my mom met him. Four of her sisters and her mom still had the last name of CUSIMANO. Her moms maiden name was SCAGLIONE. One of her sisters was married but I cannot read the name on the back of the picture I have. If my parents were still alive this search would not be so difficult. I am descended from the noble family of Lavizzari of Como who resided in the Lake Como region and many of the towns in the upper Italian countryside around the Valtellina region east of Lake Como in the 15th/16th centuries. My line can be traced to Galeazzo Lavizzari who migrated to the town of Mendrisio in the Swiss canton of Tessin (Tecino) in the first half of the 16th century. Some of his descendents were still in Mendrisio until the 1960's. Other members of the family migrated to Hamburg in the 18th century where the name was corrupted to Lauezzari. My great, great grandfather came to London from Krefeld near Dussledorf in about 1850. I am in touch with the German family as well as other members of the English branch. My half-brother Robin Lauezzari lives in Mountainville, New Jersey. I am interested in contacting any members of the Lavizzari family in Italy or Switzerland who may be related. I have virtually a complete family tree from about 1500 for the Swiss, German and English branches and a copy of the Lavizzari coat-of-arms.

I've heard such wild tales of this man's life I would love to learn more about him. My grandmother's name was Immacculatta Madalena Benigna. I don't know when she came to America exactly, but it was in the first part of the century. She landed on Ellis Island and spent the rest of her life in Connecticut. I am searching for family that imigrated from Sorrento (near Naples) at the turn of the century. My grandfather, Luigi Carlo RUSSO (Louis Charles) arrived at Ellis Island on March 2, 1903 on the Trojan Prince. He was about 13 years old. His brothers Frank (Francesco) of No, 233 Odgen Ave, Jersery City, NJ., Anthony (Antonino died in 1955, I believe in N.J.) and two sisters, Maria who was a nun (soura)-she returned to Italy) and Christina who married in New York (I believe) and had 3 children. I do not know her married name. My grandfather lived with cousins in NY for a while. He married in NJ (I believe) a woman named Charlotte? They had a son, Louis Charles Russo II around 1915 somewhere in NJ. They later divorced and he moved to Beverly Farms Mass. where he remarried my grandmother Mary C. Doucette. They had 2 sons, one being my father, (John Francis Russo). I went to Italy 4/97 and found my grandfathers sisters children. I will visit Sorrento again 3/98. Wow! I feel like I hit the mother lode! My search is for anyone (probably a cousin) with the name LONGATTI or FRANZOIA. Both are from the northern areas, Longatti from Lombardia, and Franzoia from the Piemonte. I am trying to find more information about my grandfather Adolfo Favro who was born in Avigliana, Torino, Piedmonte. He came to the United States around 1914 and went to Pocatello, Idaho to work in a macaroni factory with his brother Silvio Favro. After a year they went to Portland, Oregon to work at Scarpellis (Mac factory) then came to Seattle, Washington where they spent the rest of their lives. Hi Joe: You can see from my name that we have something in common. My grandfather, Bruno Vita (called Joe), was born in Calabria near Cretona or Catona and came to N.Y. in the early 1900's. He married Cristina Crupi and had about seven kids. His son, Anthony, was my father. I believe grandpa had a brother, maned Paul. Joe worked on the docks on N.Y. as was in charge of hiring on one of the piers. We was known for his honesty and fairness. We're probably not related but who knows. I don't know anything about his parents since it was rumored that his father was killed when he was young and his mother gave he, his brother and sister up to relatives to bring up. To make a long story short, I like all of you am looking for my roots. My Grandfather died in 1985 and with him died most information on my family. I hardly knew him nor did my mother as he and my Grandmother were divorced when my mother was 4. My mother has always wanted to know where our family is from and the family name. Looking for Sicilian family with name, DeBella. My name is Neil DeBella and I saw your entries in the Italian Geneology Guestbook. I am becoming more interested in researching my Sicilian heritage. I am the youn gest of my family of four and my father, Jake is the last living sibling of his family. My father is nearing 90 years old (I'm 45) and everytime I ask to learn more about our family, I get stonewalled or he appears disinterested and have ye t to get much info (mafia connection?). Here is what I know so far: My Grandfather's name was Giovanni (forgive me if I don't spell the Italian word s correctly). My father tells me that he was from Cooleeoone, Sicily (this is ho w my father remembers it pronounced). I do know there is a Corleone, Sicily (yes , of course I have seen The Godfather). My great Uncle Jake and my grandfather came to America on a cattle boat from Sic ily (this is the story at least) and were processed through Ellis Island. The tw o of them lived in New York for a time and worked in the shipyards; one was a ri veter, the other caught and placed the rivets. I can only speculate on when they arrived in America (1890-1897). I don't know what my Uncle's real name was...ev eryone I knew called him Uncle Jake. It seems that my family reuses names quite often (What's the difference between Giovanni and Jake? Plus my father's name is Jake). There were two Lenas, two Emmas and two Annies. Anyway...the two immigrants next settled in New Orleans, worked the shipyards th ere, and then moved to San Francisco to do the same thing. As the story goes, wh en the 1906 earthquake hit, my family (don't know how many there were by now) pa cked everything they had into a cart and walked to San Jose, CA and permanently settled there. My Uncle and Grandfather then started a wholesale produce busines s and sold fruits and vegetables from the farmers in Salinas, Castroville, Fresn o, etc. to the grocers in San Jose. The business eventually became know as Piera cci Bros., and they worked out of a place called "The Market" which was located on Race St. or Market St. or somewhere in the "then" downtown area. It may still be there. Other partners in the business were Henry "Hank" Pierraci and Henry P asquinelli. My grandfather married a woman named Lena (I think) who was from Albania but was described by my father to be Italian (something about the abundance of Italian blood in Albania at the time). My grandparents had six children, Carrie, Martin, Peter, Annie, Emma, and my fat her, Jake, all born in San Jose. My father's birth certificate is a bit question able and I'm not sure how my father got it because it was burned, theoretically, in the '06 earthquake. The birthdate, my sister argues, is up to five years off . My father's true name is Giovanni Gesepi DeBella (Jake, Joseph or Jakie, and s igns his name J. J. DeBella). I always knew that my father was born in 1910, but my sister says that he is older than that. When my son, Mark, asked my father w hen he was born, he told him 1909. I suspect I will never know...age is very per sonal with my father even though all siblings lived into their 90's except for A untie Carrie, the first born. She died of lung cancer (non-smoker). Every Aunt a nd Uncle have died in their given birth order, my father being the last survivor . My grandfather owned 5 houses before he died and they were/are all located on Li ncoln Av. in San Jose where some DeBellas still reside (Luke, a cousin). My Uncl e Pete was at least 95 when he died just a few years ago in San Jose. I lived in San Jose for 30 years and then moved to Portland, OR. I have a cousin living up here, Mark Pizzo, who graduated in my high school class. We do not kn ow each other nor see each other. I suspect that the DeBella name was once Bella (beautiful). The de or di are giv en names or titles. One time I was on the Queen Mary in L.A. and stopped in to a Coat of Arms shop and tried looking up our coat of arms and they found Bella an d the de was a title of sorts. Enough for now. I hope this helps. I am copying Chuck Starpoli because he is als o looking for Bellas. Both grandparents and Autie Carrie died before I was born in 1953 so much is los t in family knowledge and culture.

Seeking family from the Abruzzi Region. Family names are Sforza, DiSanto, DelVecchio. My maternal great grandmother was Rosalba Sforza and I understand that anyone with that last name is descended from the Sforza family who ruled Milan in the 1400-1500s. Thanks in advance for any information.

For many years now I have been wanting to trace my family history and find my relatives, but I don't have that much information and I didn't know where to start. This site is very helpful. Than-x!! My Great Grandpa and Great Grandma cove over from Italy on a boat in the early 1900's. I don't know my gg-Grandpa's first name but his last name was Civilla(Sivilla?). He was form somewher in Northern Italy. My gg-Grandama was Magdelina Supa Civilla(agian I'm not sure of spelling). She came from Southern Italy. They had one son in Italy. I'm looking for anyone with info on the D'Amato family. I have no idea exactly where my ancestors came from in Italy, I think from the boot of Italy but Im not for sure. I do know where my greatgrandmother is from but, I don't know what her maiden name was. I know my gg-grandmother was from Abruzzi. If anyone has any info could you please help. Bolgiano family originated in Milan, Italy prior to 1700. Migrated to either Zweibrucken or Munich, Germany in early 1700s. Franz Wilhem Bolgiano was probably born in Germany and arrived in Baltimore, Maryland in 1788 or 1798. Changed his name to Francis William Bolgiano, was married and had seven children. My branch began with his son, Francis William Bolgiano, Jr. He moved to St. Louis, MO around 1834 and was drowned in the river around 1838-39. His son, Francis Ault Bolgiano moved to Louisiana around 1847, married three times and had 14 children. Have collected approximately 275 names and charted their relationships. Am interested in any family history and/or data on the family name, including Italian, German or USA relatives. (Other names - Briscoe, Weller, Self, Scarber, Scarbrough, Sigler).

If you can pick out some key words to read in Italian, it would be helpful. Have found some birth certificates that way. Would like to see if anyone knows Volpe's, Rizzo's, or Cutrones that come from Sicily. Plan to visit and would like to see if I have any living relatives. Grazie
