Just read your description. Well I'm not from Philly, but here our community we have here, every June La Festa. Which is kind of what your are describing. Or more so at one time now LaFesta has changed but in the early times it was more like you are describing. Always had Baci ballTournaments.
My grandfather, in his younger life, would meet his italian friends on Fridays and play baci.
